The entire REL range is divided into three product lines. The S-Series occupies an intermediate position between the top-end Gibraltar line and the younger T-line. The new REL S / 5 takes the lead in the S series, bringing it close to the flagships of REL. Compared to the younger models of the S / 3 and S / 2 series, the newcomer has increased the speaker to 12-inch (from 10-inch for S / 3 and S / 2), and also significantly increased the power to 550 W (from 350 W for S / 3 and 250 W for S / 2).

The REL S / 5 subwoofer is made in a rather voluminous case, resembling a cube with a side of 45 cm. The case rests on triangular legs, into which spikes can be installed. The legs provide enough space between the body and the floor for the efficient operation of the passive radiator located at the bottom of the device. The front wall with the main speaker is covered with a protective mesh on a strong frame. On the sides of the body, there are probably handles for carrying the device. This is not to say that they are very convenient, but they still fulfill their function. The long-throw driver of the model uses a special alloy diffuser. It differs from its predecessors in a reduced mass and, accordingly, allows the subwoofer to react to a signal more quickly. The speaker basket is made of die-cast aluminum. A passive radiator of the same size uses a flat and very light carbon fiber diffuser.

The crossover uses a low latency filter (about 8ms). The filter is tuned for the smoothest possible pairing with different speakers. Circuits are provided to protect the subwoofer from overload, voltage drop, and overheating. An interesting feature of the S line is the built-in wireless receiver in its own LongBow format. This format provides uncompressed audio transmission with minimal latency. However, to use a wireless connection, you will have to purchase an additional wireless transmitter. The rear panel has a line input, high-level input on Neutrik connectors, and LFE input. The manufacturer strongly recommends using the high-level and line inputs at the same time for a more accurate match with the speakers.

The subwoofer showed a pleasant, slightly softened sound. The bass is very deep and dynamic. It is tonally well-defined and quite dense. Quite neatly, the subwoofer matches the satellites. There is slight roughness in response and some uncertainty at the lowest frequencies. The attack is slightly weakened, however, this is noticeable only in some modern music, which makes very high demands on the lower register. Acoustic recordings are reproduced by the subwoofer most accurately and legibly.

REL has equipped the S5 with its proprietary technology, including its unique “High Level” input. This allows the subwoofer to connect directly to the main speakers, ensuring a more natural blend of bass frequencies with the rest of the audio spectrum. This feature enhances the overall soundstage and provides a richer listening experience. Additionally, the S5 includes an adjustable crossover and phase control, allowing users to fine-tune the subwoofer’s performance to match their specific setup.
