MK Sound MX250: The Ultimate Subwoofer for Deep Bass Lovers

The basis of everything

We test active subwoofers for 50-60 thousand rubles.

In the first issue of the magazine this year, we studied subwoofers that cost only slightly more than 30 thousand rubles. Today, we will try to determine how big the increase in bass quality and quantity is with an almost double increase in price.

Otherwise, we can only talk about improving the qualitative and quantitative indicators. Larger and more reliable emitters carefully damped heavy cases, and high output power of the amplifier stages – all have a beneficial effect on the depth and other properties of the bass produced by the subwoofer. As for the richness of the finish and switching capabilities, then in these parameters, even the younger brothers of today’s competitors looked quite decent.r

In addition to testing the participants as part of a cinema system, their ability to reproduce musical material was traditionally assessed – both multichannel (as part of the same home cinema) and classic stereo, for which the subwoofers were integrated into our reference stereo path.

One of the trendsetters in the field of cinema sound, MK Sound in its senior models of subwoofers prefers the push-pull scheme, which provides deep and energetic bass.

The largest participant in our competition was surprised first of all by the height of the case. Upon closer examination, it turns out that the internal space of the subwoofer is divided into two parts – in the lower niche there is one of the 12-inch dynamic heads, whose radiation is directed to the upper chamber, in which, in turn, the second speaker of the same size is mounted, radiating outward. Thus, both drivers work on the total volume in the antiphase. Hence the name of such a scheme – push-pull. This specific placement of the speakers explains the considerable height of the MK Sound MX250 case. The black finish of the cabinet is very ascetic, and the entire facade is covered with a fabric grill on a rigid MDF base.

The frequency response graph of the MK Sound MX250 subwoofer demonstrates a wide shelf of stable sensitivity, starting from the middle of the second octave of the low-frequency range and confidently invading the mid-frequency area (Fig. 1). Below this section, the characteristic has a decline with a steepness of 12 dB per octave, and at a frequency of 20 Hz, the sensitivity drops by 18 dB relative to the average value in this section. Due to the low level of distortion in the lower octave, we can safely recommend actively equalizing this area with a receiver (taking into account the features of the room) and achieving equalization of the characteristic.
